The Power of Multi-Generational Engagement

I didn’t expect my mom and children to connect.
By that point, conversation with my mom was already limited. I wasn’t sure what it would look like to have them in the same space, let alone interact in a meaningful way.
I remember watching closely, wondering if it would feel awkward… or if there would just be silence.
At first, there wasn’t much.
But then I placed something simple in their hands.
No instructions. No expectations. Just something to touch, explore, and interact with.
And that’s when everything shifted.
My kids approached it with curiosity.
My mom responded through touch.
And suddenly, they were doing the same thing, side by side.
No one needed to explain anything.
No one needed to “get it right.”
They were just… connected.
That was the moment I realized something important:
Connection doesn’t require the same abilities.
It just requires a shared way in.
Multi-generational engagement creates that space.
It removes the fear and pressure to communicate in specific ways and replaces it with something more natural interaction.
And in those moments, cognitive ability doesn’t matter.
What matters is that they’re there, together, sharing something, without words, creating memorable moments together.
This makes the next visitation one of positive anticipation, not fear.
